July is Smart Irrigation Month, an annual reminder that watering wisely is one of the easiest and most effective ways to conserve water. This year, the message is especially important as Colorado continues to experience drought conditions and mandatory outdoor watering restrictions remain in effect for district customers.

A well-maintained irrigation system not only keeps your landscape healthy but also prevents unnecessary water waste. Damage from lawn equipment, clogged sprinkler heads, hidden leaks, or improper winterization can waste thousands of gallons of water over the course of a season—and increase your water bill.

Fortunately, a few routine maintenance checks can make a significant difference.

Monthly Maintenance

Taking a few minutes each month to inspect your irrigation system can improve its performance and help conserve water.

• Adjust sprinkler heads. Make sure sprinkler heads aren't blocked by plants or other obstacles and are directing water onto your lawn and landscaping—not sidewalks, driveways, or buildings.
• Check water pressure. Excessively high pressure can cause sprinklers to apply water too quickly, resulting in runoff instead of allowing water to soak into the soil.
• Inspect for leaks. Look for broken sprinkler heads, damaged pipes, clogged nozzles, or soggy areas that may indicate a leak. Even small leaks can waste a surprising amount of water over time.

Annual Maintenance

As irrigation season comes to an end, don't forget to properly winterize your system.

In Colorado's freezing temperatures, water left in irrigation lines can freeze, expand, and crack pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads. Having your system professionally winterized each fall can help prevent costly repairs and ensure it's ready for next spring.

Periodic System Audits

Every few years, consider having your irrigation system professionally audited. An irrigation audit evaluates how evenly water is being applied throughout your landscape and identifies opportunities to improve efficiency. Small adjustments can often reduce water use while maintaining a healthy lawn and landscape.

Smart Upgrades That Save Water

Technology can make irrigation even more efficient.

Rain and freeze sensors automatically shut off your irrigation system during rainstorms or freezing temperatures, preventing unnecessary watering.

Smart irrigation controllers use local weather data or soil moisture conditions to automatically adjust watering schedules based on your landscape's actual needs. These controllers eliminate much of the guesswork and can significantly reduce outdoor water use throughout the season.

Before investing in new equipment, check with your local water provider to see if rebates are available for qualifying water-efficient irrigation products.
